Another union has announced it will rally its members to support the candidacy of the two Democrats running to be the next governor and lieutenant governor of Massachusetts.
Gubernatorial hopeful Martha Coakley and her running mate Steve Kerrigan this week were formally endorsed by the Professional Fire Fighters Association of Massachusetts, which pledged to leverage its 12,000 members across the state to work to get the Democratic ticket elected.
"Martha Coakley has demonstrated her commitment to public safety through decades of service," said Edward A. Kelly, president of the union, in a statement. "As Firefighters we swore an oath to put our lives on the line for the people of the Commonwealth and are the first line of defense in a disaster. We need a governor who values public safety as much as we do. In these uncertain times our Commonwealth's security must be a top priority. Martha gets that."
In receiving the endorsement, Coakley and Kerrigan expressed appreciation and promised to work with and for the firefighters and paramedics the union represents, if elected.
The union says its 12,000 member roster is comprised of first responders in more than 200 towns and cities from the Berkshires to Cape Cod. Coakley and Kerrigan are facing Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker and his running mate Karyn Polito. There are also three independent candidates running with respective lieutenant governor picks to lead the commonwealth on Beacon Hill.
