A Message from Martha: The Campaign Ahead

Thank you for your support in Tuesday’s primary election. I’m proud to be your nominee for re-election as Attorney General and I’m looking forward to the campaign ahead. As we begin, I want to take a moment to speak directly with you as a friend and supporter.

At the AG’s Office, we work every single day to stand up for you and for the Commonwealth in the face of unfairness. We listen to what the people of this state are asking for from us, and I want to share with you how we respond.

Marlborough paradeYou want your children and your family to be safe – online, at school and in your neighborhood and we take action to challenge online sites like Craigslist, confront bullying and cyber-bulling, and provide summer jobs for teens.

You are fed up with fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars – and we go squarely after corruption, prosecuting unemployment fraud, and recovering more than $100 million in our Medicaid system.  For every $1 in budget funding my office receives, we return $5 back to taxpayers and consumers.

You want someone to stand up for the middle class during this economic crisis.  We’ve recovered over $440 million from big banks and Wall Street for consumers, keeping 15,000 people in their homes, and we are challenging unfair rate hikes by big gas and electric companies.

And, you want your government to stand for fairness and we successfully challenged the Defense of Marriage Act, standing up for the civil rights of all.

It is a real privilege and a serious responsibility to serve as the Attorney General and to represent you, and the campaign I’m running will reflect that.  I hope you’ll join me this fall to discuss where we’ve come, what’s important to you, and how we can take on even more in the next four years.

With Best Wishes,

Martha Coakley

Visiting Caucuses

Martha in Brookline Today Martha was on the campaign trail with stops at caucuses in West Roxbury, Lowell, Braintree, Lexington, and Brookline.  Throughout the day, hopeful delegates shook hands and offered their support as Martha and volunteers worked to secure 10,000 certified signatures to get her name on the ballot.  We spent the day live-tweeting from the trail (follow @MarthaCoakley on Twitter).  Thanks to the ward and town chairs for welcoming us today: John Cushing (W. Roxbury), Mike Demeras and Patty Kirwin Keilty (Lowell), Sonya Shaw (Braintree), Judith Pappo (Lexington), and Cindy Rowe (Brookline).  Check out photos from today on our Flickr stream.

Caucus attendees were also vying for spots as delegates to this summer's Democratic State Convention in Worcester.  It's always great to see such big crowds of active and involved participants in this process, and today was no exception with large crowds everywhere we went.

There were a number of caucuses held statewide today, and we wish we could have made it to each and every one!  There were a number of reports from the road posted to BlueMassGroup today.  Were you at your caucus?  Tell us about it!

First Organizational Meeting

organizational meeting Last night we opened the doors to Coakley Headquarters and welcomed our volunteers for our first organizational meeting. We had a great crowd of enthusiastic supporters, and officially kicked off our signature drive to get Martha's name on the ballot for re-election as Attorney General.

It was great to see some familiar faces again and some new supporters joining the team for this very important first phase of the campaign.  To ensure that Martha's name appears on the ballot, we must collect 10,000 certified signatures in a short couple of months.  We've posted a new page on our website explaining the signature process, and everything you need to know to get involved.

As part of this drive, we're focusing attention on local caucuses.  Throughout the month of February, Massachusetts communities will be holding its caucus to elect delegates to this year’s Democratic State Convention in Worcester this June.  These caucuses are great locations to gather signatures, with attendees from a single municipality in one location (signature papers are separated by city/town), and who are typically registered Democrats or registered unenrolled voters.  The Massachusetts Democratic Party has a complete list of caucus dates and locations on their website: www.massdems.org.

Check out our events calendar for updates on which caucuses Martha will be attending throughout the month.
